Who can donate blood?
Generally, those enjoying good
health can help patients by donating blood regularly.
You must be in good health
A least 17 years of age
Weigh at least 110 pounds
Be free of illness and infection
Not be at risk for
AIDS or hepatitis
Each time you give, you will
be asked a series of confidential questions about your
medical history and lifestyle choices. You'll also be asked
about any medications you may be taking. Sometimes,
potential donors think they can't give because they are
taking prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Please don't
exclude yourself from donating for this reason. Our medical
personnel are available to answer your medication and health
questions and can help you determine if you are a good
candidate for giving.
What happens when I give
blood?
It takes about an hour to give
blood, but the actual blood collection only takes about 10
minutes. After you read a fact sheet explaining health
conditions and risk factors that may prevent you from giving
blood, we'll need your name, address and some form of
identification such as a driver's license. Your answers are
kept confidential. Medical personnel will check your
temperature, blood pressure, pulse and iron level. Once you
meet eligibility requirements, about one pint of your blood
will be collected using a sterile disposable needle which is
used only once and immediately discarded. Light
refreshments, including our famous cookies and juice, help
you replace fluids before getting back to your usual
activities. Donors tell us they leave with good feelings,
knowing they are saving lives.
